The original version of The Map was published on August 6, 1965, for the 20th anniversary of Hiroshima bombing. This object, conceived by legendary graphic designer Kohei Sugiura, composed of different strata (case, envelop, map, text and images), is a complex reflexion about the signs left by the explosion on the lands of Hiroshima. Kawada employs a very metaphoric approach which expresses between reality and abstraction, echoing in a way the words of the writer Kenzaburo Oe : "a world of violence where I had to live".
