David Horvitz

David Horvitz was born in Los Angeles, where he currently lives and works. He studied at the University of California and at the Waseda University in Tokyo. He obtained a MFA from Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College, in 2010.

Through a poetic exercise of the everyday, David Horvitz creates work that plays with information networks, languages, places, time, nature and the body.
His vast and nomadic oeuvre embraces the forms of photography, sculpture, installation, artist's book, performance, mail art, sound and text, through various media such as printed objects, neons, correspondence, ink stamps, site-specific installations and gastronomy. His work examines questions of distance between places, people and time in order to test the possibilities of appropriating, undermining or even erasing these distances. Using images, texts and objects, with a propensity for the art of displacement, his works circulate and function independently of their author, often penetrating the intimate sphere. By confronting us with his works - in the postal system, libraries or airport lost property departments - David Horvitz draws our attention to the infinitely small, to inherent flaws, to alternative logics, to the imaginary. Horvitz defines his art both as an object of contemplation and as a viral or systemic tool to instigate change at various scales. He often resorts to the creation of fictions that surreptitiously insert themselves into reality.
